A History of the Ministry with Lesbians & Gays at Blessed Sacrament Church

On February 2, 1986, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles, announced the establishment of the Archdiocesan Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Catholics during a special mass at Blessed Sacrament Church. This archdiocesan ministry would be parish based and would help to serve the spiritual needs of lesbian and gay Catholics and their families.

Almost immediately, a parish based ministry was formed in Hollywood at St. Ambrose Church. Many members of Blessed Sacrament Church became members of that ministry.

In 1998 a Ministry with Lesbians and Gays was started at Blessed Sacrament Church. The ministry held monthly meetings, developed a weekly ministry to gay men detained at Men's Central Jail and hosted occasional speakers to educate the parish about church teaching regarding homosexuality.

After a period of inactivity, the Ministry with Lesbians and Gays was re-established at Blessed Sacrament Church in the Fall of 2004. The ministry is active in parish life and in developing parish outreach to lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgendered persons and their families.
