2006 Ignatian Jubilee Year Activities - California Province
Province: Jesuit Communities, Pastoral Ministries, Secondary and Pre-Secondary Schools, Universities, Social/International Ministries and Office for Development and Advancement.

Jesuit Communities
- The Province annual Christmas celebrations for the Jesuits in December 2005 and 2006 will include a Jubilee prayer service to celebrate Saints Ignatius and Xavier, and Blessed Peter Faber, and to foster communal prayer as part of our seasonal gathering.
- Jesuit communities are encouraged to include Ignatius, Xavier and Faber in the Eucharistic prayer during daily Jesuit community liturgies, as appropriate, when the universal Church is not commemorating another saint on a given day in the liturgical calendar.
- Individual Jesuits and communities are encouraged to pro-actively promote vocations to the Society of Jesus, in addition to responding to inquiries.
Pastoral Ministries
- Blessed Sacrament, Hollywood
- Added six (6) webpages about the 2006 Jesuit Jubilee to their website at www.blessedsacramenthollywood.org/
- December 3 and 4, 2005. All Masses - Commemoration of Jesuits Francis Xavier, Peter Favre, and Ignatius of Loyola
- The superior met with the other Southern California superiors to determine the feasibility of a common Jubilee celebration.
- Brainstorming the following possibilities:
- a morning of recollection for Jesuits and partners with a focus on mission/evangelization (Xavier) or Ignatian Prayer (Faber);
- using the Vigil Mass on December 3 at Blessed Sacrament or Loyola Marymount University, with a reception for Jesuits, families of Jesuits, and partners, to celebrate the beginning of the Jubilee Year;
- a prayer card or poster card marking the Jubilee Year which can be shared with partners;
- showing Loyola Productions videotape Partners in Vision to partners and/or sharing videotape with partners;
- a one-day conference/workshop on the Spiritual Exercises for Jesuits and partners who are retreat directors (Faber).
- Loyola Institute for Spirituality (LIS), Orange
- Producing a series of short prayer services on the life and work of Peter Faber for a website at the invitation of Confederacion LatinoAmericana de Centros Ignacianos de Espiritualidad (CLACIES), which is associated with LIS and planning to offer an array of reflection materials about the Jubilee.
- Our Lady of Guadalupe, San Diego
- Considering/planning the following:
- December 3: special evening liturgy with procession
- Advent parish retreat with Ignatian themes
- 19th Annotation Retreat offerings
- Special emphasis on the Novena of Grace in March
- Considering/planning the following:
- Our Lady of Sorrows, Santa Barbara
- The Novena of Grace in honor of St. Francis
- An Ignatian retreat for the parish community
- St. Francis Xavier, Phoenix
- Formed a Jubilee Committee, which meets monthly, comprising members of St. Francis Xavier, Brophy College Preparatory, and Xavier College Preparatory communities. Subcommittees have been created to plan each event.
- Each month during the Jubilee Year, St. Francis Xavier, with Brophy College Preparatory and Xavier College Preparatory, will hold an event, which will be listed in a brochure, including the following:
- December 3: a mass to launch Jubilee Year activities, with Bishop Olmstead presiding and concelebrated by all Jesuits in Phoenix at 4:00 p.m., followed by a barbecue and a Christmas light parade;
- January 26: "Baroque Art, the Jesuit Contribution", lecture on art and architecture at Xavier College Preparatory Performing Arts Center featuring Spanish Baroque architecture from the period of Ignatius and Xavier, 7:00 p.m.
- February 15: "Music in the Jesuit Tradition" - a concert in the Church featuring Jesuit music performed by choirs from the three schools at St. Xavier Church, 7:00 p.m.
- February 4-8: five-day "Busy Persons Ignatian Retreat" individually directed for about fifty people;
- November 5-8: parish retreat directed by Larry Gillick, S.J., from Creighton University;
- February 18-21: a parish retreat directed by Greg Boyle, S.J.;
- March 18: "Faith Lift," featuring Fr. Michael McCarthy, S.J., focusing on Ignatian Spirituality
- March 23: "Faith and Science" lecture by Bill Stoeger, S.J., of the Vatican Observatory, at Xavier's Performing Arts Center;
- April 1: St. Francis Xavier Parish "Fun Fest," sponsored by the St. Francis Xavier School Parents' Association, including families from the three schools;
- April 22: Closing liturgy with Bishop Gordon Bennett, S.J., as presider and mass concelebrated by all Jesuits in Phoenix; Lenten almsgiving collection will be given to Bishop Bennett for his missionary diocese
- A banner reading "SFX Celebrates the 500th Anniversary of St. Francis Xavier's Birth - An Honored Heritage - a Faith filled Future" is displayed in front of church.
- A new logo has been designed for the parish and school stationery.
- A Jesuit and a lay partner will lead a weekend pilgrimage/tour to Sonora, Mexico, to visit Fr. Kino's missions and his grave at Magdalena Mission; a small book of prayers related to the pilgrimage will be printed.
- The parish will hold a one-day pilgrimage to San Xavier du Bac in Tucson, Fr. Kino's last mission, founded in 1700.
- St. Ignatius, San Francisco
- Considering having the new west doors of the church reflect the lives of Xavier, Faber and Ignatius.
Secondary and Pre-Secondary Schools

- Participating in St. Francis Xavier Parish's Jubilee activities, which includes a monthly speaker series from December to April featuring the Bishop of Phoenix and the Bishop of Mandeville Jamaica, among others.

- "Jubilee Week" will be held from January 30 to February 3, concluding with a student liturgy.

- Weave themes from lives of Faber, Ignatius, Xavier into vocation promotion.
- Focus the campus-wide celebration of St. Ignatius Day in 2006 on themes from the Jubilee Year.

- invite Steve Schloesser, S.J., to give a lecture on Catholic imagination;
- focus on lives of Ignatius, Xavier, Faber during Board of Fellows Trip to Italy in 2006;
- focus on lives of Ignatius, Xavier, Faber during Santa Clara Alumni Association Trip to Italy in 2006;
- University Institute on Religion and Politics during 2006.

- In conjunction with the Ricci Institute, Tom Lucas, S.J., will:
- give a talk on the Shanghai Cathedral Restoration Project in the context of the Xavier anniversary in November 2005;
- give a talk on Xavier in Spring or Fall 2006;
- serve as respondent at a November 2006 scholarly conference on the Society's early Asian missions to be held in Macao.
- Themes from Faber and Ignatius will be used for Campus Ministry's retreat programs.

Social/International Ministries
- China Province
- Ricci Institute is publishing a special issue of the Renlai Monthly in Chinese on St. Ignatius and St. Francis Xavier for January 2006.
- Kuangchi Program Service:
- Creating four-part television documentary on Paul Xu Guangqi and Matteo Ricci to be broadcast in 2006 throughout China by Jiangsu Satellite TV Net work in Nanjing, China. This will be followed by an international version of the program. The California Province contributed substantially to this project.
- Making available video footage and eight-part DVD production "In the Footsteps of Francis Xavier" to Jesuits around the world to use Jubilee celebrations. Jesuits in Hungary, Slovenia, and Croatia are making local language adaptations of the docu-drama bringing the total number of language versions to eighteen.
- Holding celebration with Jesuit collaborators and friends which will include mass, supper, and a talk on Ignatian spirituality in January 2006.
- Offering pilgrimage to Sancian Island and Macau.
- Forming a team that will offer presentations on St. Francis Xavier's missionary spirit and Ignatian spirituality to Jesuit parishes and institutes during the year.
- Publishing book in Chinese on the life of Blessed Peter Faber.
- The Catholic University of Pernambuco, Brazil
- During Annual Week of Integration in October, campus ministry is holding presentations on Ignatius, Xavier and Faber. This material will be provided to all of the Brazilian Provinces.
Office of Development and Advancement
- The spring issue of Mission Magazine will include a major feature on Xavier, China, and the California Province presence in Shanghai. The article is being done article in conjunction with Tom Lucas.
